Landscape Oil Painting 
Portraiture

-Brushwasher – You must have one of the following: metal-type with lid, glass jar with coil (Pearl Paint), or a mayonnaise-size jar w/lid - large enough to hold 3 or 4 large brushes. This is to clean your brushes as you work. Palette cups are not appropriate for this.

-Medium - Small jar cold-pressed or refined linseed oil.

-Pencils - A couple of 2B pencils are fine.

-Paper Towels - I prefer paper towels to rags as they are easier to dispose of and are helpful for adding an initial tone to your canvas.

Intermediate Painting

SUPPLY LIST FOR OIL OR ACRYLIC PAINTING CLASS
***Please bring all supplies to first class***

 (1) Oil or acrylic paints in the following colors: White (4-oz tube); and 1.25 oz tubes of burnt sienna, raw sienna, cadmium red light, cadmium orange, cadmium yellow light, cerulean blue, ultramarine blue, viridian, and alizarin crimson.  I use Winsor Newton, but Winton (student grade) is okay for beginners. Acrylic painters can use Liquitex or Golden paints (or Winsor Newton Galeria for less expensive student grade).

(2) Large wooden or thick plexiglass palette, 18 x 20” or larger.  You can have plexiglass cut to size at art stores, frame stores, possibly hardware stores.

(3) Painting mediums: Res-n-gel painting medium for oils, Liquitex matte medium for acrylics.

(4) Can of Turpenoid (odorless mineral spirits) for oils, water for acrylics.

(5) Palette knife for scraping paint from palette or canvas.

(6) About six oil painting brushes in a variety of sizes, ranging from a small brush for details to a brush that is about 1 1/4”.  (I prefer filberts, which are flat brushes rounded at the tip, but you can bring others if you prefer.) VERY IMPORTANT – Use new brushes or brushes in very good condition.  Worn brushes will hinder your work.

(7) Small, metal cup for holding Turpenoid or water.

(8) Roll of paper towels or cotton rags.

(9) Bar of soap such as Ivory for clean-up.

(10) Canvas or canvas board, 16 x 20” or 20 x 24”  You will need additional canvasses later on, so you may wish to buy 2 or 3 at the start. 

(11) Small sketchbook and pencil

(12) Flat, airtight Tupperware container for storing unused paints from your palette from week to week.

Most of the painting can be done with Robert Simmons Signet bristle filbert brushes sizes 2, 4, 6, and 8 or Mongoose hair brushes of the same style and size.  Rosemary & Co. offer exquisitely handmade brushes at incredibly affordable prices cutting out the middleman and shipping directly to you from their headquarters in the UK.  Their Mongoose Long Filberts are unparalleled. Sable watercolor rounds size 1 and 2. Winsor & Newton Series 7 brushes are ideal, but a cheaper alternative works just as well

 

Medium:

-Small container of odorless mineral spirits from hardware store (cheaper than art store brands), small bottle of linseed oil plus a small jar or palette cup to hold medium

 

Surface:

-Canvas pad 16"x20" or 18"x24" for the exercises and quick oil sketches.

-Canvas or gesso board 16" x 20" if focusing on portraiture.  

-Canvas or gesso board 18" x 24" or larger if focusing on the full figure.

-Cheap newsprint pad 16x20” and variety of pencils or charcoal for gestures and preliminary work if you don't want to work directly with paint.  It’s always a good idea to carry a small pad and drawing implements anyway.

Drawing Into Painting

A wide variety of drawing and painting materials are appropriate for this class. It is not necessary to acquire all of the items on this list and much of their use is at the student’s discretion. Students are welcome to use oil, acrylic and watercolor paints as well as pastel or pen and inks. Students are encouraged to experiment with a variety of papers and substrates such as stretched canvas, Clayboard and primed masonite. An assortment of brushes is recommended.

Painting and Drawing: Two Dimensional Art

A photographic image to work from – landscape, still life, or figure – but please not of someone else’s original art work.

I would recommend your choice of image dimensions not to exceed 20 inches in either direction as this is a labor intensive process.

Pencils - 2B or lighter
Ruler- at least 18 inches
Cotton Duck Canvas (unprimed and not stretched), # 8 or 10 – buy the smallest amount you can, 1 yard x 60ins. is usually the minimum.
Wooden drawing board or a piece of plywood large enough to accommodate the dimensions of the work plus a 2 ½ - 3 inch border on all four sides for stretching upon completion, and as a test strip for color samples of both pencil and wash.
Heavy duty staple gun and ¼ inch heavy duty staples (I will provide)
A small bottle of Liquitex Matt Medium
A small amount (an ounce or so) of dry mix ceramic clay to be mixed with the matt medium and ink will provide a little more tooth to the canvas in accepting the colored pencil (I will provide)
1oz. bottles of ink, red, yellow, blue, brown, black and small mixing cups
A set of Prisma color colored pencils (mid size will do)
Kneaded eraser and masking tape
Boar bristle brushes: one 2 inch cutter, one (of each) #’s 3, 5, filbert (rounded edges) and one or two small sable water color brushes. Please keep these brushes separate from your oil paint brushes.

Intro to Writing and Illustrating Children's Books

Students will need a basic sketchbook and pencil initially. We are going to move through a series of exercises where they will be sketching and eventually moving to color. They can choose the medium that they want--anything from mixed media to watercolor, acrylic, colored pencil or gouache after an initial introduction to each and the sketching excercises.

Learning to See: Color Theory for Oil and Acrylic Painters

Portrait Painting\

Canvas- 14” x 18” or 16” x 20” prepared (store-bought) stretched canvas. It is always a good idea to give a light sanding with fine sandpaper to any canvas that feels rough or scratchy, and all store-bought canvasses are improved by one or two additional coats of acrylic gesso (Liquitex® Gesso or Golden® Gesso). Please prepare your canvas at least a day before class. No canvas boards, please.                                                           

Palette- Coated-paper block type (disposable), or wooden. 12"x16".

Palette cups- One or two small metal or plastic cups.

Brushes:

- Bristles - FLATS  #1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, and 12. (Robert Simmons “Signet”)
- Sables - ROUNDS - #1 and 3 - (for details). (R. Simmons “Sienna”, R. Simmons “Saphire”)
- Sables - FLATS or FILBERTS - # 4 and 6 - (blended passages) (“Sienna”, Sapphire”) note* Sable-type brushes meant for oil and acrylic painting are long-handled; short-handled brushes are meant for water-media and will not handle the density of oil paint well.

Oil Colors:

37ml tubes - Gamblin, Windsor&Newton, Rowney, Utrecht, Grumbacher (Avoid student grades.  Example: ‘Winton’ is Windsor&Newton’s student grade.)

Solvent -TURPENOID - in the BLUE and white can. (Do not buy Turpenoid Natural in the green can.) Neither turpentine nor mineral spirits are acceptable for health reasons.

Brushwasher –You must have one of the following: metal-type with lid, glass jar with coil (Pearl Paint), or a mayonnaise-size jar w/lid - large enough to hold 3 or 4 large brushes. This is to clean your brushes as you work.  Palette cups are not appropriate for this.

Medium -Small jar of cold-pressed linseed oil.

Pencils - A couple of 2B pencils are fine.

Teen 16+
Summer Oil Painting Techniques

Newsprint pad 18” x 24” 100 pages
Pre-stretched canvas or canvas board 12” x 16” or larger. 16” x 20” is a good size, 18” x 24” is ideal
Palette knife
Disposable palette paper

Medium:
1 part Linseed Oil 1 part Turpenoid (or low toxicity mineral spirits)
1 small or medium sized bottle of Liquin
2 small empty jars to hold mediums
For cleaning brushes it is advised to buy a small container of brush cleaner and paper towels

Colors:
Titanium white
Ivory Black
Burnt Sienna
Burnt Umber
Cadmium Red Medium
Alizarin Crimson
Yellow Ochre
Cadmium Yellow Light
Cadmium Orange
Ultramarine Blue
Student grade paints are much more affordable than artist grade paints, however the difference in quality is very noticeable. There are lower-end artist grade paints that are better-priced and good quality including Gamblin, Grumbacher, and Rembrandt, to name a few.  

Brushes:
Brushes are the main tool of a painter; there are so many different kinds and brands that it really comes down to personal preference. For the purposes of this class, the following will suffice:
Filbert bristles: numbers 3 – 8
Flats: 7 – 12
Rounds: 1 – 4 

It is not necessary to purchase every number brush, but at least two or three of each kind. Ideally, flats should be larger, as they are used to block in the initial stages of a painting. Filberts need to be medium-sized since most of the actual work will be done with them. Rounds are for the absolute final touches and high lights, as well as fine detailing, so they can be smaller.
